“A task will swell in importance and complexity in relation to the time allotted for its completion.” ~ Parkinson’s Law
I read this again last week in the “The Four Hour Work Week”, by Timothy Ferris and it struck me as particularly relevant in the new, faster world that we live in. Let’s face it. We make stuff out to be bigger and harder than it really is all the time. We whine, cry, fight, and complain that we don’t have enough time or resources to complete a project. In general, we act like a bunch of babies. Then when it absolutely must get done or we can’t go on vacation, it miraculously is completed in half the time.
I’m sure you can remember several different times in your life that you accomplished more in less time and probably with better results. So here is my challenge to you. Shorten your time frame. If you think a task or project will take 30 days, change your time line to 15 days. Then PRETEND that you are going on vacation to Jamaica on day 16 and that if you don’t complete the project you can’t go. This is a fun way to trick ourselves into being more successful and reaching our goals quicker.
Of course you must be the kind of person who responds to a deadline and can set goals and stick to them. If you find it challenging to set and meet goals go buy the book “Unlimited Power”, by Anthony Robbins. This is in my top 5 all time most influential books. I’ll see you at the top!
